Scalecoat Model Primers
Prepare your next repaint with Scalecoat gray model primer. A primer stage gives you an opportunity to inspect a model's surface before applying its final color. Choose the Scalecoat I or II primer appropriate to the material and planned paint system rather than selecting a primer by color alone.
Inspect the model before the color coat
Clean away oils, fingerprints, dust and mold release, and address seams or surface defects before priming. An even gray surface can make remaining scratches, filler edges and uneven preparation easier to spot. Primer does not replace cleaning or repair, and the product label should guide its use on your particular substrate.
Choose the primer for your paint line
Scalecoat I is the line for brass and metal model projects. Scalecoat II is the line for plastic models. Check the individual primer listing and test it on a spare part, particularly if the model includes several materials or an existing factory finish.
Mix the primer thoroughly and follow its label for thinning, application and drying before recoating. Select the matching Scalecoat thinner when needed. Once preparation is complete, browse railroad and model paint colors and plan your final clear finish. For porous wood models, also review Scalecoat Sanding Sealer rather than treating wood preparation as the same process as plastic or metal.
